AI search visibility

AI search visibility is the practice of making your brand discoverable and citable inside AI-powered search and assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Google AI Overviews. It combines SEO, AEO, and GEO into one system: technical crawlability, answer-first content, and brand authority across the web.

Findability and citability are two different problems

Almost every AI visibility problem is one of these two, and they have nothing to do with each other. Diagnosing the wrong one is why sites spend months rewriting content that was never retrievable in the first place.

  • AI findability — can the assistant reach the page? Crawler allowed in robots.txt, content present in the server-rendered HTML, URL linked from somewhere the crawler goes. This is binary and cheap to fix.
  • Citability — having reached the page, will it quote you? That depends on whether there is a self-contained answer to lift, whether the page is structured into extractable chunks, and whether anything on the open web corroborates the claim.

Check findability first. A robots.txt line takes a minute to change and gates everything downstream.

Which platforms matter?

PlatformCrawlers to allowHow it answers
ChatGPTGPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-UserBrowse-enabled answers with inline citations; also answers from training data with no live fetch.
PerplexityPerplexityBot, PerplexityUserSearch-native — almost every answer carries source cards, so citation share is directly observable.
Google Gemini / AI OverviewsGoogle-Extended, Google-CloudVertexBotOverviews sit above the classic results and often satisfy the query outright.
ClaudeClaudeBot, anthropic-aiRetrieval-augmented answers with source references when web access is enabled.
Microsoft CopilotBingbotBuilt on the Bing index — Bing crawlability is the prerequisite.

Improving ChatGPT search visibility

ChatGPT answers from two sources, and they respond to completely different work. Browse-enabled answers fetch live pages, so a change you ship today can appear within days of the next crawl. Answers drawn from training data reflect a snapshot months old, and no amount of on-page work moves them before the next model release — what moves them is what the wider web says about you.

  • ✓ Allow GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User — they are three separate user agents and blocking any one costs you a surface.
  • ✓ Answer the question in the first paragraph, in one sentence, without a preamble.
  • ✓ Write H2s as the questions buyers actually type.
  • ✓ Publish the numbers: pricing, limits, benchmarks. Vague pages cannot be quoted.
  • ✓ Earn mentions on pages that are not yours — roundups, comparisons, forum answers.

What drives visibility?

AI platforms favor sources that are authoritative, recent, directly relevant, and structured for extraction. That means clear answers, schema markup, internal linking, and topical depth.

How do you measure it?

Track brand mentions, citations, and share of voice for the prompts your customers ask. Citely monitors this across all major AI platforms and shows where you are winning and losing.

There is no Search Console for this. Analytics will not tell you that an assistant recommended a competitor instead of you, or described your pricing wrongly — the only way to find out is to ask the assistants the same questions your buyers do, on a schedule, and record what comes back.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI search visibility?

AI search visibility is how often, and how accurately, your brand appears inside answers generated by AI assistants — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews. It has two halves: retrieval, meaning the assistant can reach and read your pages; and citation, meaning it chooses to quote you when answering a buyer's question.

How do I improve my ChatGPT search visibility?

Start with retrieval: allow GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User in robots.txt, and make sure the content is in the server-rendered HTML rather than injected by JavaScript. Then make the page quotable: a direct one-sentence answer near the top, question-form headings, a comparison table where relevant, and FAQ schema whose answers match the visible text. Finally, earn third-party mentions — ChatGPT frequently cites a roundup or review that names you rather than your own site.

What is AI findability?

AI findability is the retrieval half of AI search visibility: whether an assistant can discover, fetch and parse your content at all. A page can be excellently written and still have zero findability if robots.txt blocks the crawler, the content renders client-side only, or the URL is not linked from anywhere the crawler visits.

Does Google Search Console show AI search traffic?

No. Search Console reports impressions and clicks from Google Search. It does not report that ChatGPT described your product to a buyer, whether the description was accurate, or which competitor was named alongside you. Server logs show AI crawler hits, which is the retrieval side; measuring the citation side means running your buyers' prompts against each assistant and recording the answers.

Which AI crawlers should I allow?

At minimum the ones tied to live retrieval: GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User (OpenAI), ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User (Anthropic), PerplexityBot and PerplexityUser (Perplexity), Google-Extended and Google-Agent (Google) and Bingbot (Microsoft). Citely checks 20 AI crawler user agents against your robots.txt, including Applebot-Extended, Amazonbot, Bytespider, CCBot, Meta-ExternalAgent and cohere-ai, so you can decide each one deliberately rather than by accident.

How is AI search visibility measured?

By running a fixed set of buyer prompts against each assistant on a schedule and recording four things per answer: whether your brand appears, where in the answer, what sentiment attaches to it, and which URL was cited. Repeating that over time gives you share of voice against named competitors and shows which pages actually earn citations.
