What the audit scores
Five weighted criteria, summing to 100. These are the real weights the tool applies, not an illustration — citability carries the most because it is the one thing a model cannot work around: a page with no self-contained answer has nothing to quote, however authoritative the domain.
| Criterion | Weight | What it looks at |
|---|---|---|
| Citability | 25% | Whether there is a self-contained answer a model can lift without reading the whole page. |
| Structure | 20% | Question-form headings, short paragraphs, lists and tables, FAQ schema. |
| Authority | 20% | Organization schema, a visible author, outbound citations to sources models already trust. |
| Technical | 20% | AI crawlers permitted in robots.txt, and content in the server-rendered HTML rather than injected by JavaScript. |
| Multimodal | 15% | Descriptive alt text, and a table or diagram where it beats prose. |
How it works
- 1. It fetches three things. Your page HTML, your robots.txt, and your llms.txt if you have one.
- 2. It parses, it does not guess. Every check is deterministic — no model grades your page, so the same URL scores the same twice and you can tell whether a fix actually moved the number.
- 3. It reports per criterion. You get the weighted score, the breakdown, and the specific findings behind each one.
What it cannot tell you
Worth saying plainly: this audits a page, not your brand. It tells you whether an assistant couldquote you. It cannot tell you whether ChatGPT recommended a competitor to a buyer this morning, whether it described your pricing wrongly, or which of your URLs got cited. Nothing on-page can — that takes running your buyers' prompts against each assistant on a schedule and recording what comes back. More on measuring AI search visibility.
Frequently asked questions
Is the GEO audit really free?
Yes. There is no account, no card and no trial. Enter a URL and you get the score, the criterion-by-criterion breakdown and the top fixes immediately. An email unlocks the full recommendation list; everything above that stays open.
What does the GEO audit check?
Five weighted criteria that sum to 100: citability (25), structure (20), authority (20), technical (20) and multimodal (15). Underneath those it fetches the page HTML, robots.txt and llms.txt, and checks 20 AI crawler user agents — GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot, Claude-User, anthropic-ai, PerplexityBot, PerplexityUser, Google-Extended, Google-CloudVertexBot, Google-Agent, Google-GeminiNotebook, Bingbot, Applebot-Extended, Amazonbot, Bytespider, CCBot, Meta-ExternalAgent, cohere-ai.
How is this different from an SEO audit tool?
An SEO audit asks whether a page can rank. This asks whether a page can be quoted. They overlap on crawlability and speed but diverge on what matters most: an SEO tool rewards keyword coverage and backlinks, while this one rewards a self-contained answer near the top of the page, question-form headings, extractable structure and schema that matches the visible text.
Does it use AI to score my site?
No, and that is deliberate. Every check is a deterministic parse of your HTML, robots.txt and llms.txt. The same URL scores the same way twice. A model-graded audit would give a slightly different number each run, which makes it useless for tracking whether a fix actually worked.
What score should I aim for?
Above 80 means AI assistants can reach your page and have something quotable to lift from it. Between 60 and 80 there are usually one or two structural gaps worth closing. Below 60, check the technical criterion first — a blocked crawler or JavaScript-only content makes every other score academic.
Does a good audit score mean AI will cite me?
No. The audit measures whether one page is retrievable and quotable — that is the prerequisite, not the outcome. Whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude or Gemini actually names your brand when a buyer asks depends on competition, third-party mentions and the assistant's own retrieval. The only way to know is to run those prompts on a schedule and record the answers, which is what Citely does.
Can I audit a competitor's site?
Yes. The checker only reads publicly available pages, so any URL works. Running it on the competitor that keeps getting cited instead of you is usually more informative than running it on yourself.
